Worksafe Mental Injury Support
If you are suffering from poor mental health due to your work you are potentially eligible for therapy through a Worksafe mental injury claim. As a psychologist and recognised provider for Worksafe, I can see clients with a submitted mental injury claim, with no additional payment from the client necessary.
What you need to claim therapy sessions through Worksafe
- Submitted Mental Injury Claim: To receive sessions through worksafe, you need to have been in a workplace that has negatively impacted your mental health and submitted a mental injury claim to worksafe. You can submit the claim here. Please note, you do not need to wait until your mental injury claim is approved before receiving reimbursements for sessions. You are able to receive reimbursement for sessions just using your claim number.
- GP Referral All clients wanting to see a psychologist through worksafe also need a referral from their GP. A GP can also help explore potential physical health factors that could be contributing to your mental health. In addition, your GP will be an important contact throughout the worksafe mental injury claim process.
How Therapy Can Help
Dealing with work related stress or bullying can be a highly isolating experience. You can start to wonder if you are being too sensitive, or if maybe the bad treatment is justified. Speaking to a psychologist can give you perspective, help plan your next steps and begin the process of recovery. Therapy is an effective treatment for a wide range of conditions, including work related mental health issues.
My Experience
Before becoming a psychologist I spent 9 years working in a variety of high-pressure positions in the corporate world. I witnessed the full range of office behaviour, from honesty, compassion and loyalty, to bullying, scapegoating, and intimidation. I’ve seen firsthand the impact that bad office environment can have on mental health, and how difficult it can be to overcome these situations without help. As a psychologist, I’ve also helped a wide range of clients subjected to workplace bullying and harassment, which has given me better insight into the impact a bad workplace can have on mental health.
Our Work Together
When I start working with someone through worksafe they are often still attending the workplace that caused them the mental injury. This can mean at least initially treatment needs to be practical and short-term focused. What steps do they need to take to protect themselves? What are their strategies for dealing with the next few weeks? Are there additional steps that need to be taken, such as escalating a complaint, or documenting what is happening? These questions often dominate early sessions.
Once the situation has become more stable, therapy can look like the more standard work I do with other clients. This page has a good overview of my therapeutic approach and the values I have as a therapist. If you would like to see if we would be a good fit, you can get in touch with me here.
