ADHD Group Therapy Program

For the past few years I have been running an ADHD Group Therapy Program. This page has some information on why I do group therapy, how my group works, and what you can expect if you join the group program.

Why Group Therapy?

Research shows that groups are an effective way of treating ADHD. ADHD Groups provide participants with evidence-based techniques for managing their ADHD, and a supportive therapeutic environment where they can learn from and connect with other other group members. In individual therapy you are gaining insight and understanding just from the therapist. In ADHD group therapy there is an entire group of people you can learn form! This is particularly useful for ADHD, as group members often have unique strategies they have picked up over the years that other members find useful.

For me personally, ADHD is something I have an interest in, and is one of the more common issues I treat. I’ve found that groups tend to be the most meaningful treatment option I can offer. After partipating in groups clients tend to be more accepting of their ADHD symptoms, and better able to manage them effectively.

What to Expect in the Group?

Each session begins with a focus on a specific topic relevant to ADHD. I provide relevant research and techniques that have been shown to assist in this area. Group members also provide their perspective regarding what has worked for them, and how they feel about the proposed strategies. The second half of the session is devoted to general group therapy. Participants share things they are struggling and provide guidance and feedback to each other. It is this opportunity to connect with others that previous participants in the group have found most helpful.

Participants

The group is for adults with ADHD. I aim to have around eight participants in each group, with the gender split roughly equal. Before attending, you will need to undertake a free screening session with me to confirm the group is right for you.

Cost

The cost is $85 per session/ $850 for the total program. A Medicare rebate of $49.05 is also available for every session you attend if you have a mental healthcare plan and a valid referral from a GP. (You are entitled to 10 sessions of individual therapy and 10 sessions of group therapy per calendar year through Medicare.) Please note you need to commit to the entire program. Having the same group of people throughout the program is an important element of the therapy. If you miss a week you will be able to schedule a 15 minute call with me to go over the material.
